As original as the novel is, Reckless also has a vast number of references to the world of Brothers Grimm, such as the castle of Sleeping Beauty, the Gingerbread house in which Hansel and Gretel are lured into, and most obviously, the image of the Dark Fairy herself. Overall, despite his ignorance about the consequences of his actions, Jacob Reckless is a considerably knowledgeable and brave individual who will protect his friends and family at all cost, even if the price could be his own life in my opinion, these characteristics are what makes Jacob the perfect Reckless‘s hero.Īs a novice to the genre of fictional fantasy, Reckless has caught me off-guard with its well-knitted plot, along with a beautifully described setting, and charming artworks between each chapters. Furthermore, many of his one-man decisions are actually ideal choices, considered the fact that Jacob is the most experienced person of his group when it comes to both combat and knowledge. Nevertheless, Jacob is also a very caring individual as it is illustrated through his act of protecting Fox against the bandits and his quest of finding a cure for his brother’s misfortune. Moreover, Jacob’s ‘reckless’ can further be portrayed via his respond toward dangerous situations which is to handle them by himself, regardless of the harms that his death could cause to his brother and friends. After discovering the entrance to the Mirrorworld, Jacob has constantly traveled into this perilous world, risking his life finding treasures that no one had ever heard of, while ignoring the struggles that his brother and mother have to endure. Growing up without a father, Jacob Reckless is best described by his last name: ‘Reckless’.

Meanwhile, at a Goyl’s camp, the Dark Fairy has ordered a squad of Goyl, led by Heztnau – the Goyl King’s right hand – to search for the jade Man-Goyl she has dreamed of, as he could be the key to the Goyl King’s invincibility. Along with Fox – Jacob’s vixen friend and Clara – Will’s girlfriend, they set out on a quest for the cure to this malicious spell.

Soon after Will’s arrival, a Goyl wounds him with his poisonous claws, causing his skin to slowly transform into jade stone. Jacob Reckless was a twelve years old boy when he discovered the Mirrorworld, a world where all his fairy tales come to life, where forests are filled with fantastical but deathly creatures, and where the Goyl – a people whose skin made of stone – has waged a war against the Human Empire. After spending years venturing throughout the Mirrorworld, Jacob, at the age of twenty-four, finally decides to share with his younger brother Will the reason of his regular disappearances.
